A filling repairs a small area of a tooth damaged by decay, a chip or wear. After the damaged area is cleaned and prepared, the tooth is restored with a suitable material to help it look and function normally.
Tooth-colored composite is often used because it can be matched to nearby teeth. The right material also depends on the size and location of the filling, bite forces and the tooth’s condition.
Cavities do not always cause pain in their early stages. Depending on the location, they may be identified during an examination or on dental X-rays. Sensitivity, a broken area of tooth, food trapping or a visible defect can also be reasons to have the tooth examined.
The dentist examines the tooth and confirms whether a filling is appropriate. The treatment area is numbed when necessary, damaged or decayed tooth structure is removed, and the tooth is restored. The filling is then shaped and the bite is checked.
Local anesthesia is used when appropriate to help keep treatment comfortable. You may feel pressure or vibration during the procedure. Temporary sensitivity afterward can occur, but persistent pain, a filling that feels too high or worsening symptoms should be evaluated. Your dentist will discuss what to expect for the individual tooth.
A filling may be enough when the damaged area is limited and there is still plenty of strong tooth structure. If a larger part of the tooth is weakened, we may recommend a crown or another restoration.

If decay extends close to or into the pulp, the dentist may need to evaluate whether the nerve can recover or whether root canal treatment is indicated. A tooth with extensive structural damage may need a crown or, if it cannot be restored predictably, another treatment. A filling is not automatically the most conservative option when it leaves the tooth weak.
Dental filling materials are selected based on the size and location of the restoration, bite forces, esthetic considerations and clinical needs.
The most important steps are brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth every day, limiting frequent sugar exposure and maintaining appropriate dental examinations.
There is no guaranteed lifespan for a filling. Longevity depends on cavity size, location, filling material, bite forces, oral hygiene and whether recurrent decay develops. Routine examinations help identify worn margins, cracks or other changes that may require monitoring or replacement.
The fee depends on the tooth, the number of surfaces being restored and the extent of the treatment. Dental insurance benefits may reduce the patient portion, but coverage varies by plan. After evaluating the tooth, NewStar Dental can review a treatment estimate and applicable benefit information.
